Blog Post 4 - Transfer Pricing

If the Campus implemented a system where each student got an allocation of Illinibucks, it would definitely change the way the university system worked. If Illinibucks have the sole purpose of moving a student to the head of the line, there are very limited uses of this payment method since it is to create a system of gaining priority but not necessarily spending it for a physical result. This also implies that each student receives a set amount of Illinibucks for their time at the university that they must save and spend as they see best fit for the most optimal results of their time here.

The two ideas that come to my mind when thinking of the potential ways Illinibucks could be put to use are when picking housing and when picking classes. Freshman have to do their prior research and keep track of their time to choose their dorms and make sure they get the one they want before it fills up. That process is very stressful since it ends with where you are going to live for the first year of college. It determines the kinds of friends you will have, the quality of food options you have and the amenities that will be closest to your dorm. It puts a lot of pressure on prospective freshman as they are choosing where to live along with the stress of coming to college.

The idea of having a set amount of Illinibucks for each student for the course of four years or per year would create a sense of fairness in some ways but would be unfair to those who earn the right to move ahead of line. Illinibucks could be a great system for selecting dorm rooms because of all the other factors that matter in where you live. However, when selecting classes, this system has a few flaws. The reason some people have priority in choosing classes before others is because of scholarships, honors awards or age. Having Illinibucks be a standard system set for all students equally would be unfair to those who require priority to select classes. The way to fix this would be to have a set amount of Illinibucks given to all students and those who have academic awards that allow them to have priority now would obtain more Illinibucks. The way to spend this currency would be an online system that requires every student's ID number and name on the existing online system we have for U of I students already. The way to assure no problems arising with having too low or too high prices is setting a limit on how many can be purchased or giving each students a set allocation of Illinibucks. This way financial background would factor into the level of fairness with this system.

Illinibucks could be a great use of transfer pricing within the university but would have to be carefully considered and have strict guidelines to be a fair system and an easy one to adopt. Whether its for picking dorm rooms or selecting classes, there are uses for this system and how it can be implemented.

Blog Post 10 - Triangle Model

This model in relation to the different types of conflicts we have been addressing is very interesting. I believe in situations when a person is trying to mediate two sides of a situation it must be done in a very reasonable and thought-out way in order to come out with the most successful outcome. I have experienced this in multiple situations both in work and internships as well as in RSOs on campus. Holding a leadership position often puts people in situations where they have to balance out the authoritative aspects with also maintaining a positive relationship with every member of their team. I have talked about my experience in an on-campus consulting organization in a lot of my blog posts because of the amount of real-life experience it has provided for me. My experience in CUBE consulting, an entirely student-run organization has taught me so much about the way organizations run and has provided me examples of a lot of the situations talked about in this class.  A...

Blog Post 3 - Opportunistic Behavior

I was on the high school speech and debate team and I mainly focused on two events. I did impromptu and team policy. Impromptu was where you were given three topics and limited time to pick one and deliver a five minute speech on that topic. Team policy was in pairs and you and your partner would develop a thorough case that is used all year long to advocate for that plan and refute all arguments that opposing teams will present against it. The point of this event is to modify the case as the year goes to make it better and better. There was one year that me and my partner were competing in states for our speech and debate league. We were doing incredibly well and had been winning round after round. It then came time to the round right before finals and during this semi final round it was very close and very unsure if we had won or not. When we found out we won as a pair we also knew who we would be going against in the final round due to hearing about it from other teams. In that m...

Blog Post 11 - Final Post

This class enhanced a lot of ideas and concepts that were never really taught in a classroom setting. Through the blogs, I was able to reflect on a lot of internship and RSO experiences in a way that I never have before. The various different models for the way people inherently act in organizations or group settings taught me a lot about the structure on how to potentially resolve these issues. It put a lot of these very simple and day to day conflicts and situations in a more methodical light and allowed me to reflect on experiences I once just looked over as failures in projects or bad team members or even bad leadership. This class really allowed me to use a lot of economic principles we learn in other classes as well such as game theory concepts and macroeconomic mathematical concepts. A lot of things learned in previous classes were put into more real life scenarios and situations. My process for doing the blogs and excel homework was pretty consistent after the first week of ...
